The Litter pick annually organised
by Derek Harris with support by the Parish Council., who fund the refreshments,
provided at cost by the Crown Inn, which are given to all those helping, over 50
people most years. Collects litter and rubbish throughout the village and on all
the approach roads leading into the village to the Parish Boundaries and up the
Nassington Road to the top of the hill and the areas by the river used by the
public which are in Countryside Stewardship Scheme.
The Parish Council takes pains to
preserve the verges and village greens so that the whole village can enjoy them.
They are used for May Day celebrations, and games by the young in the village
e.g. rounders, football.
Many verges have been planted under the guidance
of one resident with daffodils, more are due this autumn and the residents
will help to plant them. The bulbs were paid for by all following an
appeal.
As well as litter bins around
the village there are also dedicated doggie bins. These are located outside the
village shop and near the entrance to the mill field on stocks green. Dog waste
bags can be provided by Wendy in the village shop free of charge, do please ask
her and use the facilities provided to clear up after your dog.
The volumes of traffic through the
village have given rise to concerns about safety in recent years. The 50
residents who gave up their time to monitor the traffic flows have not wasted
their time as the Hunts DC have decided that there is a problem with the
volumes and speed of traffic through the village an average speed of 38 MPH in
the 30 MPH limit area along Overend. Works to reduce speeding are due to start
winter 2008
The Elton 50/50 exists to protect
and preserve the fabric of the Church and the Chapel. The joint initiative
organises such events as the biannual garden trail when over 30 village gardens
are open to the public. The next one is June 28th, 2009 make a diary note.
Even if your garden is not open it is good to see so many other people using the
event as an excuse to tidy their own gardens and take a pride in the village
which is very much on show and for such a good cause.
The
recent schemes to clear and tidy areas of villages involved dozens of
villagers.
The area outside the school on
school lane can now be used for car parking and the bank on Vinco terrace should
not get so icy during the winter in future ( thanks to Jackie Moore for
providing cold drinks for the "workers" on a very hot day)
